Repair & Maintenance
Mianus River Bridge Collapse
On June 28th 1983 the Mianus River Bridge on Interstate 95 collapsed in Greenwich Connecticut. This was eventually attributed to a faulty Pin and Hanger construction design (upper right of photo). This effectively cut the main east coast thoroughfare between New York and Boston. Steinmetz was contacted within hours to supply 24 hour support services to the reconstruction team. Initially this took the form of providing services for installation of a temporary span. Over the next two years, Steinmetz provided machining, fabrication and other services on a continual basis. Our final responsibility was the on-site re-boring of 24 attachement points for the updated Pin and Hanger assemblies.
