Steinmetz relationship with the baking industry started in 1958 supplying repair and maintenance work for a local plant of a nationally known brand. The next 60 years have seen Steinmetz expand into supplying production equipment and systems that have been delivered throughout the world. We still provide repair and maintenance services to many local bakeries as those are the roots that help feed our growth.
Nationally, Steinmetz is not a brand of bakery equipment widely recognized. Yet our signature can be found in many wholesale bakeries in the US. Think “purpose-built” and that is where you will find us. It’s not the in the miles of conveyors – although we have those also - but in the specialty ingredient, make-up, production, packaging or post-packaging equipment that we are found. It’s not the off-the-shelf equipment solution, but the solution specific to your unique product and needs that Steinmetz is found.

Our customer initially required replacement parts for packaging equipment that was no longer supported by the OEM. We started by reverse engineering and duplicating the original parts, but many seemed overly complex and expensive so we started redesigning. We ended by re-engineering 90% of the machine to reduce part count to approximately 1,500 from 4,000. Once again, semi-automation was the correct solution for this dry-goods facility. Basket destacking, conveyors, stackers and dolly loading were supplied with ergonomic operator stations.
Steinmetz was able to reproduce multiple units by reverse engineering a single, damaged part. These parts are rough-cut by waterjet and finish machined on CNC or manual equipment depending on final requirements. Most parts we produce are digitized to allow future repeatability or easier design changes.

The tray on left was difficult and expensive to replicate by the OEM. Steinmetz Reverse Engineered and manufactured units in less time at a significant savings.
Full automation is not always practical or cost effective. Partial automation of common components in a repetitive environment can increase productivity while reducing the risk of injury. Such was the case with this tray handling and packing system. Steinmetz provided all basket handling from de-stacking to packing and on to stacking and dolly loading. Ergonomic packing stations were designed, prototyped and tested with production personnel prior to manufacturing.
