Our
Story

Steinmetz Machine Works, Inc. was founded in Byram Connecticut in 1939 by Henry G. Steinmetz. Henry had recently immigrated to the United States from Germany where he had worked as a Master Machinist. Post-war found Steinmetz machining components for products of the various industries scattered around the Northeast as a niche was found repairing and making replacement parts for the production equipment used by these manufacturers. He added metalworking and fabrication equipment to support this demand. Even back then, adapting to his customers’ needs.

In 1967, the Michelotti family purchased the business after the death of Henry Steinmetz, incorporating another wave of fresh ideas, prevailing work ethic, and a strong sense of customer focused business.

Through the years, small repairs and parts work grew into providing maintenance, our leather belt driven machines turned into motor driven, manual machining to CNC, yet the knack , if not hunger, for an odd-ball repair and problem to solve remained. Our business is more proof that there is an association with the name “Steinmetz” and problem solving.

By the late 1980’s the business was steadily coming into the modern age, as the engineering capabilities expanded with Bob Muldoon as the mechanical mastermind, and Bill Michelotti as the driving force behind the actual “Steinmetz Machines” that still run in some bakeries today. Those machines included Bread Over-Wrappers, Basket Stackers/Unstackers, and all manner of Product and Basket Conveyors.

As customer requests for small parts became those of resolving mechanical equipment or production issues, our niche has been found solving problems in bakeries of all sizes. From the largest in the Northeast, to those just getting their start, coupled with new leadership being guided by the old guard, Steinmetz continues to serve our customers in a way that creates lasting relationships.

In the current day and age, we have adapted to suit our clients needs of skilled labor and thus have curated an extra-ordinary team of mechanics, machinists, welders, and millwrights. We have been successful in applying and fostering those skills into a hard charging “Special Forces” squad of technicians that takes on challenges that others make excuses for.

Our business is one of consistent and tireless effort in striving for the ideal, and of pursuing the Prudent, not the Convenient. When your business becomes our business, it pays to have our attention.

We are looking to further replicate our success in your bakery, and in your maintenance department, and want to listen to your problems!
